Staying Fresh

Kid City has spent the past four years updating and upgrading to prepare for a season
of growth while sticking to its core mission to make its customers smile. BY JAMIE MORGAN

Kid City is a regional chain but thinks like
a big player in terms of the large volume
purchases it makes to keep prices down.

T

he key to Kid City's success is that the children's apparel and accessories retailer knows
exactly what it is and exactly what it is not.
The family owned company opened shop
in the late 1950s with one store, selling children's
clothes, accessories and baby furniture for children
from newborn to size 14. From then to now, its mission has been the same: to sell valued products at
prices that make its customers smile.
The company does that by combining the best
techniques from local and national retailers and improving upon them. Although Kid City is a small,
regional chain - at the moment - it thinks like a big
player by making large volume purchases. It can also
take advantage of local opportunities, such as purchasing closeouts. CEO of Kid City Jack Shamosh
says the goal is to buy bigger volumes than the local
competition and work sharper than the bigger chains.

"Between those two things, we are able to offer
great value," Shamosh says. "Our customers know
us for having a great selection and great buys. Our
customers don't come here for cappuccinos. We have
current fashion at great prices. We don't want to be
Bloomingdales or Barney's. We want to service the
customers in our area so they know when they come
in here they can shop with confidence."
When Shamosh says "here," he's referring to one
of the 18 stores in Kid City's family. The company
operates stores in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania and has its sights set on new locations within this tri-state area. It plans to open one store in the
second quarter and is planning two other locations
to open before year's end. The growth comes after a
season of strategizing in which store openings took
a back seat and operational improvements moved to
the forefront.
