LICENSING EXPO 2012 PREVIEW License to Amaze This year’s Licensing Expo promises dynamic brand-building and retail development, along with exciting new properties that break out from the fringes and provide a few surprises. ver the past 20 years, licensing has become an increasingly powerful platform for brand extension and the further monetization of brand equity. The Licensed Industry Manufacturers Association (LIMA) was a fledgling organization in 1980 when the first Licensing Show was held in New York City. As the 2012 Licensing Expo draws near, it’s clear that licensing has become a dynamic tool in brand-building and retail development. In fact, licensing touches virtually every industry as trademarks and copyrights – which typically are marketed as brands – are leveraged by owners and licensed users. More than 20,000 attendees will gather at The Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas for the Licensing Expo to network, identify new business opportunities and meet with current business partners. With more than 400 exhibitors promoting thousands of properties, the expo will provide retailers and manufacturers with new opportunities to enhance their businesses in 2013 and beyond. This year’s keynote speaker, Kathy Ireland, exemplifies the possibilities when licensing is properly harnessed. Ireland has built a $2 billion business and continues to successfully extend her brand into new categories. As always, movies, sports, corporate brands, art, television series, celebrity brands, classic children’s properties and much more will be featured by large and small exhibitors.
