EXPO WEST 2012 SHOW WRAP-UP It’s Natural New products and industry issues enlivened the largest Natural Products Expo West, where retail buyer attendance grew 13 percent. n Southern California not far from the Magic Kingdom of Disneyland, more than 60,000 natural food and product industry members filled more than 1 million net square feet at the Anaheim Convention Center March 8-11 for Natural Products Expo West. Its producers, New Hope Natural Media, say it is the largest Natural Products Expo on record. An industry staple for 32 years, retail buyer attendance at Expo West grew 13 percent this year. More than 2,000 companies exhibited at the expo, which included education, events and new products and trends. The expo covers the categories of natural and specialty foods, organic, supplements, health and beauty, natural living and pet products. Discussions at the expo covered a variety of topics, such as the United States and European Union’s organic equivalency agreement, the movement against genetically modified organisms in food and products, the support of the Just Label It campaign and recent developments in the Food and Drug Administration’s draft guidance on new dietary ingredients (NDI). The guidance is supposed to help companies decide when a premarket safety notification for a dietary supplement containing an NDI is necessary and how to prepare NDI notifications. Kathleen Merrigan, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s deputy secretary of agriculture, spoke at the expo on how to build regional food systems across the country while supporting producers, stimulating local economies and creating job opportunities. Jimbo Someck, owner of San Diego’s natural grocer, Jimbo’s Naturally, commented, “The fact that there are this many people here and so many new products is reflective of how I well the industry is doing.” Nutrition Business Journal data indicates industry growth of 8 percent over 2010. Retailers found more than 540 new companies exhibiting at Expo West. Members of the press voted on best new product launches at “Best of West: Press” with awards going to Noosa, Aussie culture yoghurt; Bambooee, bamboo towels; and Inner-Eco, Coconut Water Probiotic Kefir. “The number of new exhibiting companies and products launched at Expo West demonstrates the strength of our industry and the level of confidence in the growth of natu- ral, organic and healthy lifestyle products,” said Adam Andersen, show director for Natural Products Expo West. Building on the momentum of Expo West, the Natural Products Expo East will be Sept. 19-22 in Baltimore. The next Natural Products Expo West will be March 7-10, 2013, in Anaheim.
