Retail COAST GUARD EXCHANGE SYSTEM Supplying Readiness The Coast Guard Exchange System provides the goods and services that keep U.S. Coast Guard men and women supplied in remote locations. or the last decade, the protection of U.S. shores has been an important component of homeland security. Regardless of how remote they are, those shores are protected by the brave men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard. Providing goods and services to meet their needs wherever they are is the responsibility of the 66-store Coast Guard Exchange System. Whether on the East, West or Gulf Coasts, the Great Lakes, Alaska, Hawaii or Puerto Rico, the Coast Guard Exchange System provides food, materials, uniforms, consumer electronics, housewares, and just about anything that can be obtained at a general merchandiser. But for Coast Guard members - or “Coasties,” as they are nicknamed - and their F families, those goods usually are provided at a market basket savings of approximately 22 percent. “We operate to generate a profit, but since the profit is returned to the Coast Guard’s Morale, Wellbeing and Recreation Department (MWR), technically we are not ‘for profit,’” COO John Reiley explains. “They’re the folks that run the bowling alleys, gyms, fitness centers - the types of things that improve the quality of life for the active-duty men and women and their dependents. We have a double mission to provide services and products at a discount but still make a profit.” The guard’s stores range in size from 1,500 square feet to the 43,000-square-foot flagship store in Chesapeake, Va.
