Seeing
Growth

One truism about licensing and retail is
that each intellectual property (IP) should
uniquely capture its specific brand DNA.
For example, over the next 18 months
our cover story company, Sony Pictures
Consumer Products, featured on page
18, plans to launch an exciting line-up
of films, the franchises Smurfs and Hotel
Transylvania; new animated films THE
EMOJI MOVIE and Peter Rabbit as well
as live-action titles, such as Jumanji and
Hotel Transylvania 3.
The goal is to not only create unique
storytelling for children and their
families, but also grow those audiences
globally to create greater merchandising
and licensing opportunities.
"Not only are we looking at films as a
content source, but also television, digital,
interactive VR and short film content to
tell our stories and distribute content,"
says Jamie Stevens, executive vice president of worldwide consumer products
and licensing. "There are tremendous
opportunities to extend the life of our IP.
Historically, competition came from other
movies and television shows. Today, there
is a wealth of non-traditional options for
kids and parents."
Like Sony, companies Mars Retail
Group (page 14) and WWE (page 34)
are all aiming to capitalize and expand
on existing and new IP by providing
consumer-friendly product.

Licensing and retail is certainly a market to tap as global retail sales of licensed
goods totaled $251.7 billion in 2015,
according to the International Licensing
Industry Merchandisers' Association's
(LIMA) Global Licensing Industry Survey 2015 Report.
The United States is the leading
country in the sale of licensed goods,
accounting for $138 billion of that revenue, according to the report. We see the
impact of that enumerated further with
our Licensing Expo Preview on page 32.
The Licensing Expo is the largest annual tradeshow dedicated to licensing and
brand extension. Owned and organized
by UBM Americas, the premier event will
be held at the Mandalay Bay Convention
Center in Las Vegas on May 23 to 25.
More than 16,200 retailers, manufacturers and licensees will attend the event,
providing the newest brands and hot
character products to keep your shelves
fresh and on-trend.
